Lactation Consulting

What to Expect

When you come into our practice there are a few questions that we will need to ask first to gather more information regarding you and your baby’s health, including pregnancy and delivery information. We will also check your baby’s weight and ask questions regarding breastfeeding and go through any specific concerns you have.

Reasons to consider lactation consulting include:

  • Trouble with latching or painful latching
  • Low milk supply
  • Poor weight gain in your infant or weight loss
  • Breast pain and/or infection
  • Refusal to take the breast or increased fussiness
  • You have a baby with special needs (e.g. premature infants; multiples)

Lactation Care Management Partnership with Accountable Health Partners

Stony Brooks Pediatrics is proud to be a participating practice for Lactation Care Management (LCM) through Accountable Health Partners. AHP offers a patient-centered and community-responsive Lactation Care Management program designed to expand access to appropriate lactation care and breastfeeding/chest feeding support and to help families offer optimal nutrition to their newborns and young children.

The LCM program is designed with flexibility to meet the needs of individuals and their families. Families are provided with education, practical clinical support, and care coordination as needed. To meet the unique needs of each family, individuals may meet more or less frequently with their lactation care manager, and support can be provided in person or by phone. Parents enrolled in LCM may meet with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) at their participating OB/GYN practice, at Noyes Hospital at the time of delivery, and/or a participating pediatric office.

AHP’s Lactation Care Managers and Stony Brook Pediatrics’ providers are here to support families in meeting their goals for their baby’s nutrition and feeding plans. Ask your pediatrician about LCM today! Stony Brook Pediatrics is a New York State Breastfeeding Friendly Practice. https://www.health.ny.gov/prev...
