Stony Brook Providers

Our providers consist of four physicians, four pediatric nurse practitioners, and two physician assistants all supported by a a full staff of experienced pediatric nurses.


Our Physicians


Joan Flender, MD

Flender

Dr. Joan Flender is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is a clinical instructor at the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology. She graduated with a degree in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University in Ithaca and then went to complete her medical degree from Cornell at their NYC campus. After her pediatric residency at the University of Rochester, she moved to Dansville and started a medical practice for infants, children, teens, and young adults.

Dr. Flender has been an active member of the Dansville community since 1981, volunteering in many areas from being a little league score keeper to the Department of Health, along with being a member on the Noyes Hospital board. She has unique interest and training in child development for children with special needs, and children with emotional or behavioral issues.

She resides with her husband currently in Dansville where they raised their three sons. She enjoys her family time, reading, hiking, and traveling to escape the cold New York winters.

Deanna Lyons, MD

Lyons

Dr. Deanna Lyons received her medical degree from the University of Rochester. Her residency training was also at the University of Rochester where she completed a year as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. She is board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Jennifer Graham, MD

Graham

Dr. Jennifer Graham received her medical training from Ohio State University College of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, she completed her Family Practice residency at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie, PA. Dr. Graham is board certified in Family Practice. She is on the Active Medical Staff at Noyes Memorial Hospital and currently practices exclusively pediatrics.

Jason Elwell, MD

Elwell

Dr. Jason Elwell received his Medical Degree from the University of Toledo School of Medicine in Toledo, Ohio. He completed his Pediatric Residency in June 2010 at the University of Rochester. He is board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics.


Pediatric Nurse Practitioners


Kathryn Edwards, PNP

Edwards

Kathryn Edwards is a board certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner whom received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from The University of Buffalo in 2004. She then proceeded to work as a pediatric bedside RN for several years in such establishments as Johns Hopkins Hospital and Golisano Childrens Hospital. Her RN experience ranges from inpatient medical surgical pediatrics as well as the Pediatric Emergency Room. She completed her Masters Degree at the University of Rochester in the Care of Children and Families Program. She has ongoing relationships with the University of Rochester and often mentors nurse practitioner students. She joined the Stony Brook Pediatrics team in 2009 and is a Board Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

Lacey Fox-Smith, PNP

Smith

Lacey received her Bachelors in Nursing from the University of Rochester in 2011. After a brief time of caring for patients on a medical-surgical floor, she went on to become a pediatric home care nurse, then a nurse at a private pediatric office in Brighton. During that time she completed her Masters Degree in Care of Children and Families from the University of Rochester. In July of 2013 Lacey joined the Stony Brook Pediatrics office. She is a Board Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

Jordanne Swanson, PNP

Swanson

Jordanne is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner whom received her Bachelor’s degree in health sciences from Syracuse University and a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Rochester in 2012. She then proceeded to work as a bedside RN for 5-6 years at Highland Hospital and where she worked at the Children's Hospital in the Pediatric ED. She completed her Master’s degree at the University of Rochester. In June 2018 she joined the Stony Brook Pediatrics team! She is a Board Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

Kathryn Faulkner, PNP

Swanson

Kathryn Faulkner is a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner whom received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from Alfred State University. After graduating with her Associate’s degree in nursing she began working for Stony Brook Pediatrics as a Registered Nurse beginning in 2016. She then went on to complete her Master’s degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. She continued her career with Stony Brook Pediatrics in 2019 as a Board-Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.


Physicians Assistants


Patricia Wheeler, RPAC

Wheeler

Trisha Wheeler received her Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Geneseo, and trained as a Physician Assistant at the Medical College of Georgia.

Caitlin Albano

Albano

Caitlin is board-certified by the NCCPA as a Physician Assistant. She received her bachelor’s degree in Biology from SUNY Geneseo, then went on to get her Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. There she did rotations in several areas of medicine, but completed elective rotations in the NICU and an additional family medicine rotation for extra primary care experience.
